Lecture on Maimonides @ Temple Concord

Sunday, February 7, at 10:30 a.m.

"Maimonides: Physician, Biologist, and Philosopher" is the topic for an Adult Education Brunch to be held at Temple Concord on Sunday, February 7, at 10:30 a.m.

Anthony Preus, Binghamton University Distinguished Teaching Professor of Philosophy will be the speaker. Preus is an historian of ancient and medieval philosophy and science; he has written on Aristotle and Galen, two of Maimonides' major intellectual sources from the Greek tradition.

Preus plans to focus on Maimonides' medical treatises; some of those treatises are intended as convenient summaries of classical medical advice, especially dietary advice. Others are detailed medical advice to high-ranking clients(the sultan of Egypt and his family) with specific medical concerns--the patient's worries about defense against poisoning, or the patient's wish to perform sexually with his several wives and concubines, or for treatment for asthma or hemorrhoids, for example.

Preus plans to talk a bit about the medical and scientific context of Maimonides work in this area, and about the philosophical theories on which his medicine and biology were based. No prior knowledge of any of these areas is necessary to participate in this discussion.

The cost to attend the brunch will be $5 per person.  To make reservations, call the Temple Concord office at 723-7355 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

TICKLING LEO

Some Family Secrets Should Never Be

Forgotten

Sunday, November 22

3:00 PM & 7:00 PM

A Film Set around the days of Yom Kippur, TICKLING LEO is a contemporary drama that

follows three generations of one Jewish family whose

secrets threaten to destroy its

future.

Contact EPAC for Tickets ($10)

Endicott Performing Arts Center

102 Washington Ave, Endicott

Film makers will be in attendance for discussion & questions after the film:

Jeremy Greenberg Davidson (former Hillel student and Vestal resident)

The themes in the film (interfaith relationships, filial duty, and most importantly -- how silence about the Holocaust can infect future generations) often provide an      engaging discussion which we hope to have with the community.

Set on Yom Kippur in the Catskills, TICKLING LEO is a family drama which explores how three generations of one family are affected by the choice one man (Eli Wallach) made to survive the Holocaust in Hungary. Produced by Mary Stuart Masterson and Barn Door Pictures, it stars the wonderful Eli Wallach, Lawrence Pressman, Annie Parisse, Daniel Sauli, Ronald Guttman and Victoria Clark and was awarded the Jury Prize for Best Film at the 2009 Stonybrook Film Festival.

Please be aware that there is some strong language and

male nudity in the film, and is intended for mature audiences

Special Shabbat Service and reception honoring the Legacy of Bobbie King

Friday, November 27
at Temple Concord

The season from Sukkot through Thanksgiving is a time for to express gratitude for what we have, to show appreciation for the opportunities that have come our way.

This Friday evening we will reflect on these themes.  We will be fortunate to have members of the King family with us that evening as they will be in town to be together for Thanksgiving.  We will honor the legacy of Bobbie King here at Temple Concord where she and her husband chose to give their children their Jewish education and celebrate their many Jewish life cycle events.  We will be formally naming Brian and Nina King’s 2 daughters during the service as well. Hanukkah House which includes Bobbi’s dolls, dreidels and Victorian doll house, will be open before and after services that evening to celebrate more of Bobbie’s legacy to her family, friends and community.  The Oneg Shabbat reception after services will hosted by the King family in thanks for all the support the congregation has given the family during this past year.
